What Surface Should I Apply Real Roads To?

What's the best base surface for Real Roads?

Real Roads should be applied to a flat, rigid, smooth surface.

Recommended surfaces:

Surface Type Works Well? Notes
Plywood βœ… Excellent Sand smooth for best adhesion
MDF board βœ… Excellent Smooth factory finish
Foam board βœ… Good Use rigid foam board, not soft foam
Hardboard/Masonite βœ… Excellent Very smooth surface
Plastic/acrylic sheet βœ… Good Clean surface before applying
Existing track base βœ… Good Common for slot car layouts
Cardboard ⚠️ Fair May warp over time

Surfaces to avoid:

  • ❌ Soft foam or spongy materials
  • ❌ Textured surfaces (vinyl won't adhere evenly)
  • ❌ Unfinished rough wood
  • ❌ Fabric or carpet

Application tips:

  1. Ensure your surface is clean and dry before applying
  2. Real Roads are peel-and-stick – simply remove the backing and press firmly
  3. Smooth from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles
  4. The protective matte laminate allows for light cleaning after installation

Remember: Real Roads are vinyl decals, not self-supporting materials. They require a rigid base to create a usable road surface.
