What's the best base surface for Real Roads?
Real Roads should be applied to a flat, rigid, smooth surface.
Recommended surfaces:
| Surface Type | Works Well? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plywood | β Excellent | Sand smooth for best adhesion |
| MDF board | β Excellent | Smooth factory finish |
| Foam board | β Good | Use rigid foam board, not soft foam |
| Hardboard/Masonite | β Excellent | Very smooth surface |
| Plastic/acrylic sheet | β Good | Clean surface before applying |
| Existing track base | β Good | Common for slot car layouts |
| Cardboard | β οΈ Fair | May warp over time |
Surfaces to avoid:
- β Soft foam or spongy materials
- β Textured surfaces (vinyl won't adhere evenly)
- β Unfinished rough wood
- β Fabric or carpet
Application tips:
- Ensure your surface is clean and dry before applying
- Real Roads are peel-and-stick β simply remove the backing and press firmly
- Smooth from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles
- The protective matte laminate allows for light cleaning after installation
Remember: Real Roads are vinyl decals, not self-supporting materials. They require a rigid base to create a usable road surface.
